What a weekend! The FPV Fall Classic Drone Race presented by ReadyMadeRC was an outstanding weekend, aside from the weather. Our FPV Racing Events team were posed with a decision on Tuesday… indoor or outdoor. The rain was forecast at 40% for Saturday, so we went ahead with an expansive outdoor layout. Sadly, Hurricane Patricia rolled in, or at least her remnants, and became the adversary of the event.
47 different pilots flew around the rain delays on Saturday, and in all the commotion, we were still able to hold approximately an hour of Free Flying, and 24 Controlled heats. Most pilots had 3 or 4 sessions on the track.
Sunday brought the big challenge. Overnight rain had flooded the property, and the flight line was under a foot of water. The team struck the Flight Line and re-assembled it. This, in all, combined with registration (opened Sunday because Saturday was damp and windy), delayed our start by 2 hours and 5 minutes.
From there, we started, but the overnight rain had also drenched and drowned the timing system, which was bagged and taped overnight… but toasted. The problem was fixed and the two affected heats were ran later. Midday, the sun, which we had forgotten about, came out and blinded the timing system, so we moved it and commenced again. The timing system was perfect Saturday (not wet, not blinded by the light), and eventually worked for the balance of RaceDay.
Around 1pm our Livestream Team, DroneOnFPV arrived to broadcast the “mains” (which should have been starting), and their footage (2pm – 7pm) is captured forever here.
The positive… our team, strategy and technology were able to keep us at 5 minutes 14 seconds between heats, or “the transitions”, and including breaks for tech issues, resorts, etc. we averaged 7 minutes 48 seconds between rounds including all delays, resorts, tech issues (after the start). This is an outstanding stat (includes quad retrievals and pilots powering on, gridding and returning to their chairs).
We squeezed in 2 full rounds of qualifying (15 heats of 7-8 each) and the Top-8 in our 5 Classes (plus re-races and reruns/restarts).
Big stories out of the event:

We had over 30 prize sponsors, and our thanks to each and every one of them. We awarded prizing to the Top-5 in each class, and had several tertiary giveaways for returned quads and foot races. Had the weather been better, we would have had even more fun distributing prizes… we can’t wait until the next race.
Thanks to the pilots for supporting the event and being a part of the success of squeezing it “all in” before complete dark.
Thank you to the many paid and voluntold crew. I will forget many, but every little bit helped. Thank you: Gus and Corin for a majority of the track build, Trevor for the amazing video work and before-and-after event labour, David French for the assist on sponsors and set-up, tear-down, Wayne for being a superstar with tech all weekend, and especially for the direction on the flightline rebuild, Wayne’s wife for rebuilding tents, Travis and Marty for the set-up assistance, Lukas for everything… and it was a lot… sponsors, tear down, race regulation, pilot representation, etc., etc., ReadyMadeRC – Joe, Kevin, Travis, AJ for the equipment, sponsorship support, power, tents, flags, shipping and manpower, DroneOnFPV for capturing the day, David Klein (RotorGEEKS) for the use of his Tent and manning the PropZone, Zoltan for the complete management of VTX like a superstar (and rebuilding VTX’s Saturday Night), Jay Chrisiano for keeping the race together, Tim (and the lady he appointed) for the timing assistance, Shane for designing the trophies, all the pilots that delivered prizes for the sponsors, the Clintons running the cookhouse and keeping all of our pilots nourished… and anyone else I have forgotten, we certainly appreciate it!
